Tuesday on the top 10 applicants seeking to replace Superintendent Burnell Lemoine, who plans to retire at the end of the year when his contract expires.

Tuesday’s special School Board meeting will feature 26 qualified candidates out of 32 applicants, with each board member voting for his or her top 10 candidates to be interviewed for the job, Mark Allen Babineaux said.

On Monday, Babineaux was working with Central Office staff on logistics for the board’s votes to be displayed publicly since it’s unlikely that the board’s electronic meeting system will manage the tasks.

“I think the easiest way would be to do a hand vote and transfer it to an Excel file so the public can see what the vote is,” Babineaux said.

Interviews were scheduled to begin later this month and a new superintendent could be selected as early as Dec. 7, the tentative date for the School Board to select a new leader.

The School Board allows two representatives from the 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette and the Lafayette Public Education Stakeholders Council to sit in on the interviews and recommend their top choices. regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, the School Board may receive further clarification from Baton Rouge attorney Bob Hammonds, who in a recent legal opinion, discouraged the School Board from allowing non board members to cast votes in its superintendent selection process.

Applications for the superintendent job closed on Sept. 12. However, the School Board waited until the results of public forums and an online survey related to the search were analyzed by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette communications department.

The feedback, which School Board members received Saturday in a 30 page report, will be used by board members as they narrow the pool of applicants, Babineaux has said.

The new superintendent’s priorities should be improving the management of financial and human resources; improving student performance, particularly in reading, science and math; and quality of life and improving community relations, according to the report.
